HISTORIC ST AUGUSTINE COTTAGE

One of only three historic cottages in the city built by Alderman Benjamin Pacetti between 1904 and 1910, this is the only one that retained its residential use and much of the original detail. A veritable treasure with its specialized concrete block construction (using the Pacetti designed block), brick arches over the windows and the multicolored small paned windows facing the street, this is a favorite amongst the locals and you’ll feel the same way when you see it. Every inch is a delight.

Enjoying a street-to-alley lot, there’s a pergola carport up front and detached masonry garage in back which can be accessed from the alley through a double gate. There are several bricked seating areas in the fenced backyard and another pergola waiting for some jasmine to be planted. A swing on the front porch sets the tone and the inside will not disappoint. The ceilings are all 10.5′, the wood floors gleam, the windows are large and abundant, the detail and mouldings are simply lovely and there’s a long-ago painted mural in the hallway between the two bedrooms. Living and dining rooms open to each other through a set of graceful French doors and each makes a comfortable place to gather. The kitchen, arranged galley style, has period reproduction cabinetry and a classic sink. The bedrooms flank the bathroom also renovated to suit the era and featuring more custom woodwork and cabinets. The master has a wall of built-in closets and a door that leads to the 342SF screened room which doubles as a living/dining room a good part of the year. This “Florida” room measures 19′ x 18′ with a high ceiling and a number of paddle fans to move the breeze around and this will be a quick favorite for all kinds of activities.
