A GARDENER’S PARADISE

90 years young-at-heart, this North City home is just as captivating today as it was way back when. A majestic tree canopy offers a graceful backdrop and when you check out the gardens with their private seating areas, you’ll be planning outdoor parties in a flash. But first, let’s visit the house. With a deep overhang from the metal roof, the screened front porch is an inviting place to sit even if it’s raining. A leaded glass window throws light prisms around when the sun is setting.

The living room, dining room and sun room span the width of the house up front. A brick fireplace flanked by traditional casement windows anchors the living room. Floors are 2″ heart pine and picture rail molding runs around the room. Two large six over one windows light up the dining room and the original plate rail is waiting for a new display. At the east end is a classic sunroom with ten windows looking north, south and east. The kitchen is in the center of the house – a very simple room, it’s large enough to accommodate a modern arrangement of cabinets and counters. A utility room is off the kitchen with a side door to the garden. A generous bathroom has both tub and shower and is located in the hallway between the public rooms and bedrooms at the back. The guest room is in the southwest corner. Two windows invite diffused natural light inside. The master bedroom in the southeast corner has a 13’6″ x 9’9″ sitting room which opens to a small deck.

The single garage has been converted to a storage room up front (the overhead door opens normally) and is a handy place for bikes, kayaks, mowers, toys). Follow the path as it winds through the verdant greenery and stops at a number of patios with seating areas under the shade-tree canopy. You’ll see a pergola over the patio at the door of the “garden living room.” Exposed beams, cement floor, French doors to yet another patio hidden behind a screen of graceful palms, this versatile room will be used for parties, hobbies, naptime, yoga – pick your favorite pastime and you’ll want to enjoy it right here. A lovely Spanish sink in the alcove will make for easy clean-up.

Take a moment to count the fruit trees: fig, grapefruit and orange thriving alongside ginger lilies and birds of paradise.
