What do leather, precious metals and wood have in common? Stop by 11B Aviles Street where you’ll find Dan Holiday, Joel Bagnal and Bob Stoker at Dan Holiday Leather and see how each of these artisans use their particular medium to create objects of beauty and function. Woodturner Bob Stoker has recently brought his craft to the mix and you’ll find him creating wood vessels, bowls and long stemmed goblets from solid pieces of fallen wood from local trees.

Malea Guiriba, Uncle Stevo and Sue Marrazzo invite you to the third annual Great American Scarecrow Festival this Saturday from 11am to 4pm. Being held at Simple Gestures located at 4 White Street and Anastasia Boulevard, this is a fun-filled day for all ages and all for a good cause. Free activities include make-your-own scarecrow, bobbing for apples, face painting, corn hole and carnival games and you can and will enjoy hot dogs, drinks and of course, there’ll be pie! You can work off that extra piece by tapping your toes to the live music of Lonesome Bert & the Skinny Lizards. The merchants of Aviles Street are holding the third annual Fiesta de Aviles celebration and it will be a weekend full of live entertainment including Zumba, Flamenco dancing and a Brazilian Tropicana show featuring acrobatics and dance. Don’t miss the running of the bulls at 2pm this Saturday and yes, some of those bulls will be familiar if you look closely. If you’ve been missing the music of Luis Mario Peral, this is your chance to hear him and the Jazzland All Stars. Sunday brings the popular Sangria Sunday event where the Aviles Street merchants compete to bring you the best sangria and you get to vote for your favorite. EMMA Concert Association is proud to announce that Professor Reginald Hache will open the 2012 Music Masters: Words and Music series on October 16. Professor Hache’s performance is the first of four Music Masters sessions. Hache’s rich musical career includes concerts in the US and Europe with annual appearances as a soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra and a violin-piano recital with Joseph Silverstein, concert master of the Boston Symphony. Hache will be discussing and performing selections from J S Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, Chopin, Granados, DeFalla and Debussy. Mr Hache still holds the rank of Full Professor Emeritus from his 25 years on the faculty at Northeastern University in Boston and currently teaches piano at Flagler College. Chuck Lippi, Board Certified Master Arborist and retired Cooperative Extension horticulture agent, will be presenting a seminar entitled “An Owner’s Manual for Trees.” Learn the most recent techniques and research for keeping your trees healthy at the St Johns County Agricultural Center located at 3125 Agricultural Center Drive. Joining Lippi will be Gail Compton, nature columnist for the Record, Beverly Fleming, Master Gardener and Renee Stambaugh, native plant consultant. The program is free and everyone is welcome. Julie Dickover invites everyone to the upcoming exhibition, “Transliteration,” which opens on Friday, October 26 at the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at 48 Sevilla Street. A collaborative project between painter, Sara Pedigo, and poet, Liz Robbins, the show evolved naturally based on mutual interest and respect for each other’s respective work. Pedigo has exhibited throughout the US, was the 2007 recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant and is currently an Assistant Professor at Flagler College. Robbins work has claimed the 2010 Cider Press Review Book Award and the 2012 YellowJacket Press Prize. Her poetry has appeared in numerous places and she is an Associate Professor of English at Flagler College. A reception for the artists will be held during First Friday Art Walk on November 2 from 5 to 9pm.

Barbara Minckley of the St Augustine Orchestra invites you to the opening of the 51st consecutive concert season on October 26. “An All American Celebration” will feature distinguished Jacksonville pianist, Joseph Williams, who will be spotlighted in a performance of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” conducted by William McNeiland. Other selections will include works of Howard Hanson, Aaron Copland, Richard Rodgers, Leonard Bernstein and John Williams. The first performance on the 26th starts at 8pm at the Lightner Museum or you can attend the 3pm Sunday show at Christ Espiscopal Church located at 400 San Juan Drive in Ponte Vedra.
