Congratulations: Former Marine Street resident Sally Ann Freeman took her master gardening skills with her to North City when she moved to Bayview Drive some years ago.  Earlier this summer Sally Ann’s uptown garden was recognized by the Garden Circle as being outstanding (and it most certainly is that!).  She brings her artistic eye to the outdoors and the myriad of colors and textures are a thing of beauty.

Thank you: This week marked a change of direction in the life of City of St Augustine Fire Marshal John Rayno as he started a new chapter entitled “Retirement.”  With 30 years of service to the community, he has left it a better place and we thank him for his tireless dedication.  Take a moment to read the story in this Monday’s Record and watch the interview – it will make your day as it did mine.  Welcome to Robert Growick who has come from Flagler County to be our new Fire Marshal.

Important dates:

Andrew Young is returning to Flagler College on September 19th and will be speaking at the Lewis Auditorium  at 14 Granada Street.  “A Conversation with Andrew Young” will start at 7pm and is part of Flagler College’s “Ideas and Images” program.  The public is welcome and the event is free.  Don’t miss seeing this powerful speaker.

Peace in the Park is a family friendly community event being held at the Al Wilke Recreational Field at 6140 S Main Street in Hastings.  This is your chance to be part of the 2013 Human Peace Sign as friends gather together to honor the International Day of Peace.  Help make and share the Peace soup, play some games, listen to the live music of Lonesome Bert & the Skinny Lizards and watch the Blue Lotus Belly Dancers.  Visit facebook.com/peaceinthepark2013 for details.  The event is from 10 to 2 on September 21.

Kathy Schirmacher invites everyone to the October First Friday Concert of the St Augustine Community Chorus being held on October 4 at the Cathedral Basilica on the Plaza.  Starting at 6pm the program is entitled “The World Beloved, A Bluegrass Mass” by Carol Barnett with text by Marisha Chamberlain.  Kathleen Vande Berg will conduct and the singers will be accompanied by a five piece bluegrass band.

Becky Greenberg has announced the fall meeting for the Flagler Model Land Company Neighborhood Association.  The program is still being assembled but it will be good to catch up on the events of the summer and to look towards the winter season.  Mark your calendar for 7pm on October 22 at the Markland House, 102 King Street.

Be you a skeptic or a cheerleader, Mumford & Sons is almost upon us.  New information continues to flow and you can stay current by visiting ci.st-augustine.fl.us and clicking on the GOTR logo.  I’ll be walking to work on Friday and Saturday so I will have a bird’s eye view of the goings on as the city fills up with new visitors.  See you on the street (I’m the one still wearing a sling).
